Hillary Clinton stand to be one of strongest woman in the Democratic Party—not only because of her experience and connections, but also the depths of her pockets. Detractors of the Clinton campaign point to the well-fortified cash holdings of the Clinton family as a whole as reason for critique. After all, the more money you have, the more power you can buy. Such is the story of Rebekah Mercer, a Hedge Fund heiress and bakery owner who has emerged from the fringes to be one of the most influential women in politics, let alone the Republican party.
With the multi-million dollar checks that are largely provide to her by her hedge fund manager father, Rebekah has donated more than $30 million to 30 conservative nonprofits–and that was only between 2011 and 2014.
Breitbart News (the nationalist online press that outspokenly supports Trump)? Funded by the Mercers
The Government Accountability Institute–the organization that published Hillary Clinton critique “Clinton Cash”? Funded by the Mercers.
In return for providing funding to these various campaigns and clients, Rebekah has urged her beneficiaries to hire a data firm called Cambridge Analytica that just so happens to be largely owned by the Mercer family.
The Mercers first presidential candidate was Ted Cruz, but after things started going south with his campaign, Rebekah Mercer held a meeting with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner to transition Mercer Support. After speaking to Trump at a fundraiser this past August, Mercer managed to convince Trump to replace key members of his leadership with Kellyanne Conway, Steve Bannon, and David Bossie–three individuals who are all associated with and have benefited from the Mercer family.
Mercer has made a point to keep herself out of the spotlight, going so far as to chastise allies for bringing even positive attention to her. This level of mystery begs the question: what motivates the Mercer family to be so active?
It’s rumored that both Rebekah Mercer and her father harbor strong anti-establishment sentiments. As Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center puts it, “They see the establishment as a very real threat to freedom in America, and they see the need to defeat it.”
For the Mercer’s, that means the GOP establishment. One source that has formerly worked with the family believes that “They want to blow things up and start from scratch.” Another conservative source believes the Mercer aims may be even larger. “This is about political power. This is about who controls the data and the narrative, and who ultimately is going to end up calling the shots.”
As the road to Election 2016 carries on we will no doubt be hearing more about Rebekah Mercer, whether with a GOP controlled white house or without one.
