Since he announced his bid for presidency more than a year and a half ago, no shortage of Hollywood names have taken jabs at Donald Trump. Both stars and has-beens have used their celebrity soapboxes to bash on the President; amongst the limousine liberals of the entertainment industry, actually expressing support for Trump almost feels like career suicide. So many were surprised when singer/songwriter Joy Villa attended the Grammy’s last night in a gown emblazoned with “Make America Great Again”.
Although Villa isn’t as well-recognized as many of the other names that showed up at the Grammys, this isn’t the first time her clothing has made a splash; she showed up at the 2015 Grammy’s in a dress and headpiece made from construction net. But when she made a splash this time, the left went a bit wild on social media, spitting strong language and in some instances using racial slurs, a surprisingly revealing look at the sometimes-hypocritical side of many liberals. The entertainment industry, and music is no exception in this, is made up of a lot of very big personalities with strong emotions, so it’s hardly surprising that some might say things they regret. And while the country scene is typically more right-leaning in their politics, the rest of the music industry is typically very liberal.
Even though the music industry outside of Nashville tends to be pretty liberal, there are some other notable exceptions apart from Joy Villa. Take, for example, 70s rockers Alice Cooper and Ted Nugent. Off-stage, their political views have echoed those of many conservatives who would be appalled by their onstage antics. Both acts were famous for libido-charged shows; Alice Cooper’s live performances often involved elaborate fanfare meant to shock, while Ted Nugent was known for wearing nothing but a codpiece while playing . Both musicians have remained vocal supporters of the Republican Party, with Ted Nugent even flirting with a presidential run. While the GOP ultimately went with another conservative celebrity for this election, perchance another one could run down the line. Could it be Joy Villa? Only time will tell…
